Tie-breaking Procedures – Softball

The final Conference standings will determine seeded positions for the tournament. All standings shall be determined on the basis of winning percentage in Conference games.

Two Team Ties: In the event of a two-way tie in the standings, the following tiebreaker system will be used – in order - until the tie is broken:

1. The team with the highest winning percentage in head-to-head competition shall be awarded the higher seeded position.

2. If still tied, the team with the highest winning percentage against the highest known seeded team not involved in the tie shall be awarded the higher seeded position.

3. If still tied, the winning percentage against the next highest known seeded team not involved in the tie will continue to the next highest known seeded team until the higher seed is determined.

4. If a tie still exists, the Conference office shall conduct a coin toss.

Ties Involving Three or More Teams: In the event of a tie amongst three or more teams, the following tiebreaker system will be used - in order - until the highest seeded team is determined. Once the highest seed is determined, the remaining tied teams will restart from the beginning of the appropriate tie breaking system (e.g., If a four-team tie exists, the "three or more team tie breaking system" will be used until the highest seed is determined. Next, the remaining three tied teams will be broken by beginning again at the start of the "three or more team tie breaking system" until the highest seed amongst the remaining three teams is determined. The remaining two tied teams will then use the "two team tie breaking system" to determine the higher seed amongst the two tied teams, with the last remaining tied team being seeded last amongst the tied teams. The tiebreaker involving three or more teams is as follows:

1. Composite winning percentage of each team in competition vs. the other tied teams.

2. Winning percentage of each team vs. the highest known seeded team not involved in the tie.

3. Winning percentage of each team vs. the next highest known seeded team not involved in the tie. This process will continue through all known seeded teams until the highest seed is determined.

4. If a tie still exists, the Conference office shall conduct a coin toss.
