Friday October 30th

ASU 1 UALR 0

ASU freshman Ashley McMurtry fired off a corner kick which was returned to her by a UALR player; she then fired off a shot from 25-yards out scoring the game-winning goal at the 74:31 mark to lift ASU past UALR in Sun Belt Conference soccer action Friday afternoon.

The match was moved to Paragould High School's synthetic field because of heavy rain in northwest Arkansas, which water-logged the ASU Soccer Park's field forcing the move in for the Red Wolves final home contest of the season.

The win pushes the Red Wolves record to 7-9-2 which ties the school record in wins and with a 4-5-1 conference mark clinches a berth for ASU in the Sun Belt Tournament for the first time since the 2004 season.

"As a team we are extremely excited to not only get a win against an instate rival but also to clinch a berth in the conference tournament which was our main goal all season long," said ASU head coach Derek Pittman. "The girls are playing fantastic soccer right now and I am happy to get back into the win column and building our confidence as we go into the final game of the season and get ready for the conference tournament."

ASU outshot UALR 18-14, taking 12 of their total shots in the second period. ASU had six shots on goal to UALR's eight.

Freshman goalkeeper Susan Brown set a new single-season shutout record recording her fourth of the year for ASU. Brown played the full 90-minutes and came up with eight saves, pushing her season total 94, just eleven saves shy of the single-season record (105).

Chelsea Fricke led the Red Wolves taking three shots in the contest. McMurtry finished with two shots, both of which were on goal.

This match also marked the final home contest for ASU senior's Amy Koss, Mary Geels and Erin McKenna. All three seniors earned starts in the contest.

"This was a great way for us to send off our three graduating seniors in their final home game for ASU. They are a great group of kids and have left a lasting impression as they have helped us build ASU soccer into a successful program."

FIU 1 FAU 0

Senior Night couldn't be a more fitting description of Friday's game. Senior Marina Pappas connected with classmate and fellow captain Amy Jackson for FIU's only goal in the Golden Panthers' 1-0 win over rival FAU in the final regular season game.

With the victory, FIU (11-5-3, 9-1-1) became the Sun Belt regular season champion and earned the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

"Being senior week, being our last home game, being No. 1 in the conference - all these things - it's just crazy. I need to soak it in," Pappas said. "My past three years here, we haven't accomplished anything close to this. I'll always remember this game. It's a perfect ending to the regular season."

FIU battled with FAU for nearly 84 scoreless minutes, and the Golden Panthers put FAU goalie Ashley Lantes to work with eight saves.

The Owls keeper came up big in the first half by tipping Thaisa Moreno's shot from outside the box with 17:20 to go.

Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage did her part to earn her fifth shutout of the season. She saved Brianna Kelts' header with over 27 minutes remaining in the game before coming up with another save off a free kick by Janelle Black four minutes later.

The Golden Panthers nearly scored with 18 minutes to go as a cluster formed in front of the net. Jasmin While on the ground, Aleman tried to force in the ball but Lantes got her body in front of it.

Finally, with 6:30 remaining in the game, FIU drew a corner kick. Pappas, who had been practicing her free kicks all week, said she was just focused on inserting the ball into the box. Luckily, Jackson was there on the other end.

"The keeper had it. She fumbled it and there was no way I was giving that up," Jackson said. "I ran in and kicked a right footer and it went in."

The clock ran out and the team huddled at midfield, bouncing up and down with their hands in the air, champions at last.

"It's a fantastic accomplishment," coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "How hard they've played, their self belief - as a young team, the first time you win you can easily become complacent, but they kept their heads down and kept playing hard. It's awesome we're really excited for them because they really deserve it."

The Golden Panthers, who finished sixth in 2008, became the first team in Sun Belt history to jump from sixth to first in consecutive seasons.  FIU meets the No. 8 seed at 10 a.m. on Nov. 4 and begins its quest for the school's first tournament championship title since 2000.

WKU 2 MT 0

The Lady Toppers fought through a driving rainstorm and defeated Middle Tennessee 2-0 Friday night at the WKU Soccer Complex in the regular-season finale for both teams. The win was the ninth Sun Belt Conference win of the season for WKU, setting a new program record.

It was also the first win for the Lady Toppers versus Middle Tennessee since 2001.

WKU finishes the regular season with a 14-4-1 overall record and a 9-2 mark in the conference. Depending on what happens as the weekend concludes elsewhere around the league, the Lady Toppers will either finish second or tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference standings and will be seeded no lower than third in the conference tournament, which begins Wednesday in Boca Raton, Fla. It will be the third-straight top-three finish for WKU in league play.

Mallory Outerbridge and Kaylyn Pratt provided the scoring for WKU. It was the second straight game in which each has recorded a goal and the fourth time this season. Each player now has seven goals on the season, tops on the team and good for the eight-highest single-season total in WKU history. Libby Stout worked a shutout in goal, her seventh of the year and 21st of her career. Outerbridge's goal was the 15th of her career, putting her alone in sixth place all-time.

The Lady Toppers came out on the offensive, keeping the ball in Middle Tennessee territory for much of the first half and outshooting the Blue Raiders 12-2 in the opening 45 minutes. Outerbridge got on the scoresheet in the 24th minute when she beat two defenders and placed a shot in the top right corner of the goal from 10 yards out. WKU had multiple other good looks in the following minutes, but tries by Morgan Thomas and Kelsey Meyer just missed the target.

Pratt came out and added another goal in the 52nd minute, as she took passes from Kellie Walker and Meyer to beat Middle Tennessee goalkeeper Rebecca Cushing from 10 yards away. WKU never looked back and fought off a few Blue Raiders scoring tries to come away with a 2-0 win.

The Lady Toppers outshot Middle Tennessee 17-7 for the match. Corner kicks were tied at two.

WKU finishes the season with an 8-2 record at the WKU Soccer Complex, good for an all-time mark of 59-16-6 (.765) in nine seasons. This year's senior class, playing for the final time at the WKU Soccer Complex, lost just four matches at home in four seasons.

Troy 1 South Alabama 0

The Middle Tennessee soccer regular season came to a close Friday night when the Blue Raiders lost 2-0 at rival Western Kentucky at the WKU Soccer Complex in Bowling Green, Ky. The Hilltoppers scored a goal in each half for the win against a depleted Blue Raider squad, which was missing a couple of its key players.

"We played a very solid WKU team," head coach Aston Rhoden. "We did not play as smart as we could have and our mistakes were costly. Our primary focus now is on the conference tournament and we hope to make a good run at it."

Western Kentucky (14-4-1, 9-2 Sun Belt) got on the board during the opening 45 minutes when Mallory Outerbridge dribbled around a pair of Blue Raider defenders before launching her shot into the back of the net behind goalie Rebecca Cushing at 23:02.

WKU again was able to slip a shot between the pipes for the final margin. Kellie Walker and Kelsey Meyer both fed Kaylyn Pratt at 51:38 for another score from 10 yards away.

Sophomore Luisa Moscoso was the only Middle Tennessee (12-5-2, 6-4-1 Sun Belt) player with more than one shot, as she had two attempts at Hilltopper keeper Libby Stout. Morgan Thomas and Lindsey Goad paced WKU with three shots each.
