Sun Belt Conference on the Rise

Sun Belt Football on National Television

The league’s seventh year of football includes an all-time conference high four nationally televised prime-time football games on ESPN2, highlighted by a November 20 match up when Middle Tennessee travels to Troy that features the conference’s two bowl participants from a year ago.  ESPN will also televise three other Sun Belt non-conference games: Tulsa at Louisiana-Monroe (August 30), Middle Tennessee at Louisville (September 6) and Oklahoma State at Troy (September 14).  The game between Tulsa and Louisiana-Monroe is ESPN’s first college football telecast of the 2007 season.  Additionally, the league will have a team showcased in the nationally televised R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on December 21st.

Many Top Players Return

Of the 44 position players who were named either first-team or second-team all Sun Belt Conference in 2006, 22 will return to the field in 2007.  Nine of the 22 position players who earned first-team all-conference honors were underclassmen in 2006 (8 juniors/1 sophomores), while 13 of the 22 position players who earned second-team all-conference honors were underclassmen (7 juniors/5 sophomores/1 freshmen).  Middle Tennessee returns a league high nine players who earned first or second-team all-league honors in 2006, while Arkansas State returns eight.

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Breaks Tie - Sun Belt 4, CUSA 3

Schools from the Sun Belt and Conference USA battled out six games during the 2006 regular season.  The results?  The two leagues were an even 3-3 (North Texas 24, SMU 6; Tulsa 28, North Texas 3; SMU 55, Arkansas State 9; UAB 21, Troy 3; Louisiana-Lafayette 31, Houston 28; Arkansas State 26, Memphis 23).  The two leagues met once more in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and Troy thumped Rice 41-17 to give the Sun Belt a 4-3 record against CUSA.

Western Kentucky University Joins Sun Belt Football

Western Kentucky University is currently in transition to become the ninth Sun Belt Conference football playing institution and the 120th Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) member.  The Hilltoppers will play six SBC teams in 2008 and will be eligible for the conference title and a  bowl berth in 2009.  WKU, the 2002 Division I-AA National Champions, will play three contests against current Sun Belt members this season (Middle Tennessee, Troy, and North Texas).

Sun Belt Releases Preseason All-Conference Team and Coaches Poll

NEW ORLEANS – A season removed from thumping Rice 41-17 in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and laying claim to a share of the Sun Belt Conference Championship, the Troy Trojans have been picked by the SBC head football coaches to repeat as champs.

The Trojans picked up five first place votes in the head coaches poll, released Monday at the Sun Belt’s annual Football Media Days in New Orleans, and tallied a total of 59 points.

Trojan quarterback and defending Sun Belt Player of the Year Omar Haugabook was selected as the Sun Belt’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Preseason All-Sun Belt quarterback as the league’s Preseason All-Conference picks were also released at Media Days.

Joining Haugabook on the preseason squad are fellow Trojan seniors Gary Banks (WR) and Leodis McKelvin (DB).  Banks returns as the league’s leading touchdown catcher (8 in 2006) and McKelvin comes back to a Trojan defense that returns nine starters from last year’s championship squad.

With the Trojans on top as the clear number one choice of the head coaches, the picks after that were a little more varied as a total of 8 points separated second and sixth place.

Middle Tennessee, 2006 Sun Belt Co-Champions and Motor City Bowl participants, were selected by the league head coaches to finish second this season.  The Blue Raiders tallied 44 points in the poll and Franklin Dunbar (OL), Erik Walden (DL), Tavares Jones (DL), and Damon Nickson (DB and RS) were selected to the preseason team.

The Blue Raiders likely won’t worry too much about the preseason prognostications as they were picked to finish sixth in the 2006 preseason coaches poll and ended the season tied for first.

One point was all that separated Arkansas State from second place in the poll.  The Indians were picked third, receiving 43 points and one first place vote.

ASU senior safety Tyrell Johnson was picked as the league’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and a preseason choice as All-Sun Belt defensive back.  Johnson is a three-time All-Sun Belt selection and has led the Indians in tackles for two consecutive seasons.

Joining Johnson on the All-SBC preseason squad from ASU are Matt Mandich (OL) and Koby McKinnon (LB).

Fourth place in the predicted order of finish is occupied by the SBC’s two Louisiana squads as Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette each tallied 37 points.

ULM placed a league high five individuals on the preseason team as Calvin Dawson (RB), LaGregory Sapp (WR), Zeek Zacharie (TE), Kyle Cunningham (OL), and Adam Hill (OL) received the honor.

The Warhawk offense will certainly be worth keeping an eye on as Dawson returns as the league’s rushing champion (having gone for a net of 1,210 yards last season), Sapp comes back as the league’s receiving yards leader (796 yards), and Hill and Cunningham are part of an offensive line that returns all five starters.

ULL had two individuals selected to the preseason team as Tyrell Fenroy (RB) and Jesse Newman (OL) represent the Ragin’ Cajuns.

ULL won a league best three nonconference games in 2006, including a win over CUSA champ Houston, and the Ragin’ Cajuns have been bowl eligible for two consecutive seasons.

Florida Atlantic was selected sixth in the preseason poll, but the Owls were only one point shy of the fourth place tie.

FAU had two defensive stars make the preseason team – Josh Pinnick (DL) and Cergile Sincere (LB).

The Owls surprised many last season, finishing 4-3 in league play after being picked seventh in the preseason poll.

North Texas and Florida International were respectively selected seventh and eighth in the preseason poll.  Both squads will be under the direction of new coaches as Mario Cristobal takes over for the Golden Panthers and Todd Dodge will be at the helm of the Mean Green.

UNT placed four on the preseason team – Jeremiah Chapman (DL), Maurice Holman (LB), Aaron Weathers (DB), and Truman Spencer (P).

Complete Sun Belt Football Media Days coverage is available on the league’s website: www.sunbeltsports.org.  The two day event is being held at the Hilton St. Charles in downtown New Orleans and begins the afternoon of Monday, July 23 and concludes at noon on Tuesday, July 24.

The 2006 squad had wins over Army, Memphis and New Orleans Bowl champion Troy...Already holds the fifth most wins among ASU’s 26 all-time head coaches and has led the Indians to a 17-6 record at Indian Stadium, which included a 5-0 record in 2005... During his tenure, ASU had upgraded its facilities with a new training room, weight room, locker room, recruiting room and state-of-the-art ProGreen turf on the field.

Player Attendee Tyrell Johnson

Johnson, a three-time All-SBC selection led the Indians in tackles for the second consecutive year in 2006 with 63 to his credit despite opposing offenses being on the field for an average of just 26:43 per game.  Johnson recorded a season-high 10 tackles in the last game of the season and 19 over the last two games combined.  He had seven games with five or more tackles and four games with eight or more tackles.

Florida Atlantic Owls

Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger

Schnellenberger has been part of four collegiate national championships...His 1983 Miami Hurricanes won the school’s first title, defeating Nebraska in the 50th Orange Bowl...He was offensive coordinator for Paul Bryant at Alabama when the Crimson Tide won championships in 1961, 1964 and 1965...Schnellenberger has been part of seven NFL playoff teams and was part of two Super Bowl championship staffs...He helped the 1972 Miami Dolphins to the NFL’s only undefeated (17-0) season.

Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns

Head Coach Rickey Bustle

Bustle enters his sixth season in Cajun Country in 2007...Bustle saw his winning percentage increase each of the first five seasons since taking the job in 2002, but slipped to .500 in 2006...His 6-6 record last season was only deemed a slip because of the high standards and raised levels of expectations by the Cajuns...In fact, Bustle’s 12 wins over the past two seasons are the most in a two-year period since 1994-95...ULL went 3-3 at home in 2006, marking the fifth straight season – all under Bustle - that the Cajuns have been .500 or better at home.

Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

Head Coach Charlie Weatherbie

Charlie Weatherbie is in his fifth season at the helm of the ULM football program, and recently signed a three-year contract extension...Under his direction, the Warhawks football program has made significant strides in a short amount of time improving from 1-11 to 5-6 in just a year’s time and added a Sun Belt Conference Championship in 2005.  Weatherbie came to ULM after spending seven season at the helm of Navy’s football program and three seasons as the head coach of Utah State.

Troy Trojans

Head Coach Larry Blakeney
