CHICAGO - ULM defensive end Aaron Morgan was one of just 36 players named to the final watch list of the season for the Ted Hendricks Award, the Ted Hendricks Foundation announced Wednesday. The award is presented annually to the nation's top defensive end.
Morgan leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks 18th in the NCAA with 8.0 sacks this season, ranks 19th among active players in the NCAA with 21.0 career sacks, and is second in the league and 15th in the NCAA averaging 1.35 tackles for loss per game.
The native of Amite, La., is just three sacks shy of tying the all-time Sun Belt record of 24.0 and will move into second place with one more sack this season. Morgan is ninth on the single-season Sun Belt sacks list and 10th on the ULM single-season ledger.
Now in its eighth season, the Ted Hendricks Award is named in honor of college football's first three-time first-team All-American. On-field performance, exceptional winning attitude, leadership abilities, contributions to school and community and academic preparedness are some of the criteria used to determine the Award's winner. Members of the national media, head coaches, professional scouts and former winners are included in the Award's voting committee
Previous recipients of the Hendricks Award include: Terrell Suggs (Arizona State), David Pollack (Georgia), Elvis Dumervil (Louisville), LaMarr Woodley (Michigan), Chris Long (Virginia) and Brian Orakpo (Texas).
Morgan and the rest of the Warhawks travel to in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. Kickoff from Cajun Field is scheduled for 6 p.m. as the Warhawks go for their first seven-win season since 1993 (9-3).
