NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Steven Jyles has his name next to every passing record in school history.

The senior will now see his name in the Sun Belt Conference annals often as well.

Jyles has been named the league’s Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year while being selected to the first-team All-Sun Belt squad, which was announced on Tuesday by the league office.

Jyles was not the only standout receiving specialty award honors. Middle Tennessee senior defensive lineman Jeff Littlejohn was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, while North Texas sophomore safety Aaron Weathers was tabbed as Newcomer of the Year.

Louisiana-Lafayette running back Tyrell Fenroy was named Freshman of the Year, while Arkansas State head coach Steve Roberts was Coach of the Year.

The team is voted on by the eight Sun Belt school head coaches and selected media from each institution.

Jyles’ honor should come as no surprise. The 6-1 standout led the league in total offense and became the league’s all-time leading passer and total offense leader. He had 432 yards of offense against Florida International and threw for more than 200 yards six times this year.

He threw for 2,235 yards this year and added 12 TD passes. For his career, Jyles passed for 8,987 yards, 54 touchdowns and 10,234 yards of total offense.

Littlejohn, also a first-team All-Sun Belt defensive lineman, was the anchor of a MT defense that ranked nationally all season long. His efforts helped the Blue Raiders limit four opponents to less than 275 yards in a game.

One of his best outings came against North Texas, recording six tackles, a sack and a blocked field goal.

Weathers, a second-team All-Sun Belt pick, was one of the top tacklers in the nation. The sophomore had 133 tackles in 2005, and ranks 19th nationally with 10.3 per game. He also tallied three interceptions, good for seventh in the league.

Fenroy had a breakout season as a rookie for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He became the first running back in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards. He scored 12 rushing touchdowns, one of only three freshman running backs in the country to achieve the feat.

Roberts, meanwhile, led ASU to a remarkable turnaround. After going 3-8 a year ago and being predicted to finish sixth in the preseason league coaches poll, Roberts guided the Indians to a 6-5 mark and their first-ever Division I-A bowl game.

As a whole, Arkansas State, Florida International, Louisiana-Monroe and Middle Tennessee each had eight players named to either the first or second All-Sun Belt teams.
