Former Hoosiers Set to Square Off on the Hardwood

The University of Ne Orleans Privateers and the Florida International University Golden Panthers will square off in a Sun Belt Conference Network men’s basketball game on Saturday at 3 p.m. central time. The game will be held at UNO Lakefront Arena.

UNO (5-9, 0-3) has lost seven straight games which is the longest in school history. The Privateers recently dropped a 63-58 decision to Middle Tennessee on Thursday, Dec. 31. Johann Mpondo led the way for the Privateers in the game against the Blue Raiders scoring a career-high 15 points, while Carl Blair added 14 for UNO.

Billy Humphrey, the SBC leading scorer at 17.4 points per game, joined the Privateers on Thursday after a two-game hiatus with a knee injury. The senior guard chipped in 14 points in the lost to the Blue Raiders.

This game also features a match-up of head coaches who are graduates of Indiana University who played and coached under legendary collegiate basketball head coach Bob Knight.  UNO’s Joe Pasternack was a four-year manager for the Hall of Fame head coach while FIU’s Isiah Thomas was a standout player for the Hoosiers from 1979-1981, leading IU to the 1981 NCAA National Championship.

FIU (4-12, 1-2) will seek its third-straight win over the Privateers. The Golden Panthers are led by Marvin Roberts who leads the team with a 15.5 point per game average.

The junior is also shooting 41 percent from the field and scored a career-high 29 points on Thursday, Dec. 31 in a 71-59 loss to South Alabama. FIU has lost its last two games after defeating North Texas in overtime back on Dec. 20.
