DENTON, Texas – Johnny Jones and the North Texas coaching staff taught more than just basketball to Denton area kids this week with the Reading & Hoops Program at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.
The four-day clinic taught kids to stay focused both on and off the court, and assigned reading homework to go along with basketball skills sessions. All of the nearly 50 elementary school students received free t-shirts and a ticket to an upcoming Mean Green basketball game.
“Listening and an education go hand in hand, and there is nothing more important than an education,” Jones told the camp’s attendees on Thursday morning. “I’m glad that we’ve been having fun with basketball and other activities all week, but remember, you should never stop learning.”
There’s still time to sign up for the 2009 Johnny Jones Basketball Day Camp which begins on Monday, June 15. The camp runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for boys entering grades 4-9, and teaches the basic skills of shooting, ball-handling, rebounding, defense, and much more.
The overnight camp will take place from June 18-21, and the "Little Eagle Camp" (boys and girls entering grades 1-3) is from July 13-16.
