Melchor's Career-Night Leads CCU to Upset of Old Dominion
Norfolk, Va. - Martin Melchor scored a career-high three goals in leading Coastal Carolina to a 5-2 upset win over 18th-ranked Old Dominion.
It didn't take Melchor long to start the scoring as he scored the opening goal of the match just 1:36 after the opening kick.
That lead lasted almost 12 minutes until Romario Piggott scored his third goal of the season in the 14th minute to give the Chants a 2-0 lead. It was a lead they would take into the locker room at halftime.
The second half started just like the first, but this time it was the host getting a quick goal as ODU scored a goal on a penalty kick just 1:22 into the second half.
ODU kept the pressure on CCU's defense and finally broke through to even the score at two in the 69th minute.
That's when Melchor scored again, in what turned out to be the match winner in the 74th minute.
CCU added two more goals in the final few minutes as Louis Dargent scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Frantzdy Pierrot at the 88:46 mark, and Melchor added his third goal of the match and fourth of the season on another Pierrot assist with just 30 seconds left in the match.
CCU outshot ODU 13-11 overall and held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Melchor led the team with four shots and Pierrot had three. Dargent and Piggott had two shots each.
Braulio Linares-Ortiz played all 90 minutes in goal for CCU and recorded three saves.
The Chanticleers evened their record at 6-6, while the loss for ODU was only their second of the season and drops them to 7-2-2.
It does not get any easier for the Chanticleers as they will travel to Maryland to face the third-ranked team in the nation Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.

The Sun Belt victory is the Hawks' first of the season. They improve to 5-6-1 overall and 1-1 in league competitions. The Mountaineers fall to 4-6-3 and 0-1-1.

Later in the 19th minute, Ritchie had a shot hit the post. In the 39th, Kane O'Neill (Lochwinnoch, Scotland/Gryffe) put a header on frame which was stopped on the goal line by a Mountaineer defender.
Hartwick would have to wait almost 80 full minutes to get an insurance goal. Ritchie would find O'Grady inside the box. O'Grady fired with his left to the far post. It took a deflection off the woodwork and in and the Hawks led 2-0 with 4:48 remaining in the match.
Still unsatisfied, the Hawks claimed their third goal 2:08 after their second. Ritchie's free kick was headed in by O'Grady for the hat-trick at 87:20. It marked his league-leading 10th goal of the season.
Hartwick would out-shoot its host 12-5 in the contest. O'Grady led the Hawks with four shots on target. Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) and Conor Corboy (Aptos, CA/Mississippi College) each registered two.
'Wick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) earned the clean sheet, which was his third of the campaign. He was credited with three saves, including a diving stop with just over a minute left in the game. Chasteen stopped five Hartwick shots for App State.
The Hawks will host Cornell University on Tuesday night in a non-conference match under the lights of Elmore Field beginning at 7 p.m.
